Rights Respecting School Award

The Rights Respecting Schools Award puts children’s rights at the heart of schools. Unicef works with schools in the UK and Northern Ireland to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive.
Since starting the journey in 2017 to becoming a Rights Respecting School, we have achieved the Bronze Award and are currently working towards the Silver Award. A steering group has been created to help support us on this journey. Thanks to the dedication of our steering group, a lot of positive changes have been implemented into the school community to date e.g creating a voice for children through a school council, buddy benches for both playgrounds, fundraising events , Worry Boxes/ Worry Monsters for every classroom, Anti- Bullying Ambassadors, Planned play activities for outdoor breaks and much more.

What is a Rights Respecting School?
A Rights Respecting School is a place where we can all feel confident with ourselves and it encourages us to use our voice. It has helped me build my confidence. It has helped me raise awareness of injustice in the world.
There are four key areas of impact for children at a Rights Respecting school; wellbeing, participation, relationships and self-esteem. The difference that a Rights Respecting School makes goes beyond the school gates, making a positive impact on the whole community.
The school’s Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Award threads through the whole school. It helps develop pupils’ acceptance of difference and diversity, and provides them with a strong moral compass.
