P1 - Ms. R Coyle

Welcome to our Primary 1 class page!

Our teacher is Miss Coyle, and our classroom assistants are Mrs Stewart and Mrs Breslin. There are 22 amazing pupils in our class. We are settling very well into our new school routine, and we are looking forward to sharing all of our work and experiences with you.

This year is going to be a voyage of discovery for us. We will spend a lot of time every day talking and listening, being creative and playing together! We are going to explore a variety of fun topics including All About Me, A Time to Rhyme, Brr It’s Freezing, Let’s Get Growing and Under the Sea.

In Literacy we will share ‘Our News’ on a weekly basis, as well as completing oral comprehensions and writing basic sentences. Within phonics lessons, we will spend lots of time developing our phonological awareness. We will then move on to learn how to sound out and write the letters of the alphabet using the Jolly Phonics programme. Our class will work very hard to learn as many keywords as we can this year. This will help us to begin our reading journey. Our parents can support us by revising our sounds and keywords with us at home and by helping us to spot them in books and in the environment around us. We love story time and reading for pleasure in P1, and we can’t wait to listen to and read a range of exciting stories in the weeks and months ahead.

We learn numeracy skills through play and practical activities. The areas covered are Number, Measures, Data Handling and Shape and Space. Throughout our numeracy activities we are encouraged to think and talk about what we are doing and get lots of opportunities to explain our work to others. We will explore the numbers up to 10 with the help of ‘Number Zoo’. We will learn about money, making sets and patterns, addition, and subtraction. We will also investigate 2D & 3D shapes and have fun with different measures.

Learning through play is an integral part of our curriculum in Primary 1. Play helps us to develop our language, emotions, creativity and social skills. We have daily indoor play sessions as well as fun outdoor play activities when the weather permits. We will also partake in Forest School activities throughout the year.

Reminders:

  • Please bring a healthy snack for break along with a drink.
  • PE will be on Fridays this year. Please wear appropriate footwear.
  • Visits to Strathfoyle Library will be on a Tuesday.
  • Please bring a warm coat with a hood every day.

It’s going to be such an exciting year and we can’t wait to share it with you!
