We have a fantastic and exciting year ahead in primary Seven with lots of wonderful learning opportunities both in and out of school. This is a very important year and we will be working hard to make the children’s final year in primary school a positive experience with many happy memories to treasure. We aim to make our learning inspiring, motivating and stimulating to encourage the children to become enthusiastic, resilient and confident life-long learners.

Much of our learning this year will be cross curricular, linked to our topic, linked to the pupils’ interests and linked to real time world events so that we can apply the skills we have learned in a real life and meaningful context. This term, our history topic, World War Two, will inspire our learning in English. We will learn how to write first person recounts in the form of diary writing. Our class novels - Grandpa’s Great Escape and Carrie’s War are also linked to this topic. In the second half of the term, we will write autobiographies so we can compare our lives to those of other children in the world. This will be linked to our geography topic of map work and comparing contrasting countries. Learning about Christingles in R.E. will provide the opportunity to study and write instructional texts.

In maths this term, we will concentrate on deepening our knowledge and mastery of number topics: place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will be exploring different mental calculation strategies as well as how to select the most effective method for calculation in problem solving.

Primary seven are very lucky to have the opportunity to learn Gaelic Football skills in P.E. from a professional coach, this term. After Christmas, we will begin swimming lessons in Foyle Arena.

An exciting initiative that has been introduced this term is Neuronimo which is a programme to teach children about self-awareness, how to manage their feelings and promote good mental health. First Aid skills are also planned for the primary seven children for later in the term.

Working towards our preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation (date to be confirmed), we hope to resume attending the sacrifice of mass on a weekly basis.

There are many more exciting learning opportunities planned for later on in the academic year, details of which will be updated and uploaded at the beginning of each term.
